A third congressman has come forward to confirm that house speaker Dennis Hastert knew all about the lewd emails and instant messages that were being cranked out of REPUBLICAN congressman Mark Foley's blackberry to underage house pages for the last year, no make that 4 years, no make that 11 years.
"Rep. Rodney Alexander, R-La., the congressman who sponsored the page at the heart of the furor, said Hastert 'knew about the emails we knew about', including one in which Foley asked the page to send his picture." Hastert is still denying all knowlege, saying the emails were discussed with his staff, but not him. Yeah, right! Everyone knew but Denny! Two other republicans have already come forward and said they discussed the issue with Hastert. Alexander did say, however, that Hastert's knowlege was limited to the emails that "made the page feel uncomfortable" -- not the ones that were outright lascivious.
Whether or not Hastert is lying, and he clearly is, there's a new element starting to emerge here. The spin has officially begun, and I can see exactly where they're going with this story. They're compartmentalizing it, for starters: lewd emails: bad, "uncomfortable" emails: not so bad. In fact, "made the page feel uncomfortable" almost sounds like it could have been all in the mind of the kid. An innocent email, but because of the kid's age, rampaging testosterone, and maybe his questioning of his own identity... it made him feel uncomfortable. And a little paranoid. It was just a friendly little email, the congressman (the REPUBLICAN congressman) didn't mean anything sexual by it. But boys that age, that's all they think about. They relate everything to sex. It's like they're obsessed.
That's where this is eventually going: the kid imagined it all. The fact that Foley harassed more than one kid isn't important right now, that'll be dealt with in due course. Someone stole his blackberry or something. We'll see. But for now, that's where the story's headed. Discredit the kid. Man, when you think the GOP has scraped the bottom of the barrel, they lift the barrel and scrape some more. Un-fuckin-believable.
EDIT: I go for a run and everything changes. Okay, now Alexander is backing off the claims he originally made that Hastert knew. "Poor choice of words I made there" he said. No Mr. Lying Republican Scumbag Alexander, a "poor choice of words" would be saying something like: "I hope we're all on the same page", which you guys clearly weren't until an hour ago. Jesus H Christ, do you guys ever stop lying??
