Abortion causes illegal immigration!!!
What next? This must be my week for finding idiotic claims about abortion. First there was the "abortion causes breast cancer" myth, completely and utterly debunked by experts but still being flogged like the proverbial dead freaking horse by anti-choice bloggers. (I may start calling them "floggers".) Today we have a report from a legislative panel in Missouri that listed abortion as one of the causes of illegal immigration.
The republican-led (surprise, surprise) panel stated in their report that in addition to "liberal social welfare policies", abortion causes illegal immigration because it creates a shortage of workers to do all the jobs now being done by illegal immigrants. The other panel members objected to the report, saying the abortion issue wasn't even discussed by the panel, but was slipped into the report afterwards by panel chairman Ed Emery. Emery, a republican and rabid anti-choicer who equates abortion with murder, defended his statement thusly:
"We hear a lot of arguments today that the reason that we can't get serious about our borders is that we are desperate for all these workers," Emery said. "You don't have to think too long. If you kill 44 million of your potential workers, it's not too surprising we would be desperate for workers."
Yep, that's the ticket, an army of unwanted fetuses bred for the express purpose of doing sub-minimum-wage labour. Is this guy serious? Sadly, yes. But fortunately people are on the lookout for wingnuttery from whackjobs like Emery. The democrats on the panel called his statements ridiculous, embarassing and delusional, and refused to sign the report.
Coming soon: "Abortion causes bad driving".
