Sex Nazi says:

"No contraception for you!" On Friday, the Democratically-controlled US Congress Democratically-controlled US Congress (saying it twice is twice as nice!) voted to overturn the ban on contraception funding to overseas family planning clinics that do abortions:

"The US House of Representatives has voted to overturn a ban on aid to overseas groups practising abortion."

But predictably:

"Earlier this week the White House said he would veto any legislation weakening current federal policies on abortion.

The ban, introduced in 1984, prohibits US contraceptive aid being sent to foreign family planning clinics and organisations which practice abortions.

Nita Lowey, the Democratic Representative who wrote the legislation, said that although the move would lift the ban, the prohibition on direct funding of abortions would remain."

So even though the legislation still prohibits abortion funding and only allows contraceptive funding, Bush will veto it -- just because the clinics getting the funding might provide abortions on their own dime. Despite the fact that if the clinics get more funding for contraception, they'll have to do less abortions. If they receive no funding for contraception, abortions will be pretty much all they'll be doing, and a lot more of them.

Sunday afternoon challenge: can anyone explain how this policy saves little fetuses from being aborted? Or how it's even got anything to do with little fetuses? Or how it's anything other than punishment for women who dare to be sexual? Maybe I'm missing something, but all I see is the draconian, misogynist sadism of social conservatism growing uglier and more oppressive by the day.
