Catholic League targets Maher! (Again!)

It's been over a month since we heard anything from Bloviating Bill Donohue of the Catholic League; that's far too long for him to keep his constantly-complaining trap shut. His newest target: Bill Maher (not too hard to believe, ha!). Maher's latest transgression: on last Friday's RealTime, he compared UFOs to Virgin Births. Here's Maher on his show:
“But I think it is much more likely that there could be space ships from outer space, than what a lot of things people believe. People still believe, you know, excuse me I know I may inject religion into every show but UFO’s are a lot more likely than a space god flew down bodily and you know who was the Son of God and you know had sex with a Palestinian woman, and um…”
...kaBOOM! SHRIEEEEEK! Eyeballs bulging, blood pressure through the roof, synapses firing at redline, Donohue squealed about Maher's serial "Christian bashing", calling him "America's #1 Bigot", and charged:
“There is no bigger bigot in America today than Bill Maher. His serial insults are tolerated on HBO and on late-night television shows because the producers are not outraged by what he says. How else can we explain his ability to offend with impunity?”
How? How do you think? Because nobody gives a happy flying monkey fuck what you and your psychotically-oversensitive ilk think, Bill, that's why. Funny how Bill feels free to slag minorities, yet can't abide even the most moderate musing about the plausibility of the legends that form his faith. It's odd, in a twisted way, since Donohue himself has been known to make jokes at the expense of his faith when defending sexual predators(!). Huh? Yeah, that's what I said:
"In a press release, Bill Donahue, president of the Catholic League, minimized the charges against Hudson and attempted a joke at the Virgin Mary’s expense. “Effective today,” Donohue wrote, his organization had “a new requirement for all future employees: all candidates must show proof of being immaculately conceived, that is, they must demonstrate that they were conceived without sin.”
Free Speech for me but not for thee? Sorry Bill, it don't work that way: free speech is for everyone, even douchebags like you. Suck it up, princess.

Game on!

In the War On Miller launched by the Catholic League's Bill Donohue in response to Miller's refusal to back out of their sponsorship of the Folsom Street Fair, the first salvo was fired today with a re-branding of "Miller" to "S&M Miller" and a letter to Miller's Executive Committee. Pictures from the last few years of the Folsom Fair accompany this short but sweet missive from Bill & Co.:

"It is hard to believe that if you knew exactly what kind of event the Folsom Street Fair is that you would want Miller to be sponsoring it. That is why I am sending the enclosed photos of this event (taken from previous years) to you.

In the outside chance you are not disturbed by these photos, please show them to your mother, wife and daughters.

I trust that you will do the right thing and withdraw sponsorship of this event immediately. Rest assured that we will not walk away from this issue. The public is rallying to our side, emboldening us to stay in this fight for as long as it takes."

Ahh right, Bill, they should definitely show the attachment to their moms. Mom will see a headline that barks: "Warning: extremely graphic content below", followed by whole shitload of pictures of good-looking gay guys all dressed up like the Gimp in Pulp Fiction, a couple of herds worth of black leather and even a few bare bums (some pretty cute ones, too, if I do say so myself) -- disappointingly tame. If Mom is like me, she'll continue scrolling, looking for the graphic content. Admittedly, my personal obscenity bar is fairly high, there being little if anything I haven't already done seen heard about. But even so... the pictures are pretty much what you'd expect from this kind of par-tay. A bunch of guys having their own particular brand (heh) of fun -- anyone getting hurt? Errr let me re-phrase that: is anyone not involved being adversely affected?

No matter -- Donohue, who seems to be inordinately and creepily obsessed by this little gathering, promises that it's just the beginning. On Monday, he says, the aggression will be ramped up to a full-scale assault and the demise of the once-proud Miller brand will be imminent. (Anyone think this all could have been avoided by slipping Donohue some free tickets to the event?)

Miller Time

Keeping on the roll of religious right ridiculousness, I must say I laughed my ass off when I read Montreal Simon's post about all the fuss over the Miller Beer logo appearing on an ad for a "sado-masochistic orgy in the streets" or "gay kink-fest" or something like that. Seeing Miller's logo on the ad, it didn't take long for the Catholic League's ever-tiresome Bill Donohue to go into apoplexy mode and rush to the rescue of the Morals and Values of the American Beer Drinker. I checked out the Catholic League's website and, oh, the purple-faced, quivering-jowled, forehead vein-popping outrage:

"Yesterday, we contacted the Miller Brewing Company protesting an obscene ad for an event it is sponsoring in San Francisco on September 30; the ad for the Folsom Street Fair depicts a sadomasochistic scene where sex toys are placed on the table of the Last Supper, flanked by half-naked homosexuals.!!!!!!!"

There there. Easy, Bill. It'll all be okay... Of course Miller, the wimps, immediately caved and ran away licking their nuts:

"Miller now says, “We understand some individuals may find the imagery offensive and we have asked the organizers to remove our logo from the poster effective immediately.”

So Donohue, having once again bullied someone into doing his bidding, must be happy, right? No way! Even though Miller agreed to get the logo removed from the ad, Donohue didn't think they expressed sufficient outrage in the way they worded their reply to him:

“Miller’s response (some might find mocking the Last Supper offensive?), while limp, would normally have been enough to get us off their back..."

Oh, whew! However, Miller was still sponsoring the event. Having gotten them to cave once, Donohue and his minions smelled blood in the water and circled around for awhile, doing a little research on where the money being raised by the event was going ... BOOM! Veins popped out and heart rates and blood pressure readings went through the roof again when the C-League discovered that the money raised was going to A Group They Don't Approve Of (ie., anyone but the Catholic Church). They made a quick bee-line for Miller and went on the attack again... only to be told to hit the road!

"...But we have subsequently learned that some of the monies being raised at this event are being funneled to a notoriously anti-Catholic and misogynist group, the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence (click here). After this development was brought to the attention of Miller, spokesman Julian Green responded that Miller was standing by the event. That’s fine with us. We just hope he knows that it really is ‘Miller Time.’" [...]

“Apparently, Miller has decided to side with a small band of depraved and bigoted gays against Catholics (25 percent of the population) and Protestants (60 percent of the nation). This is an ethical and marketing fiasco of colossal proportions. I will announce within the next day exactly what our game plan will be. The collision course that Miller wants with Christians is now on.”

Beautiful! The battle lines have been drawn in the ultimate showdown between Miller Beer and... a bunch of people who probably don't even drink anything but communion wine? It'll be Armageddon... it'll be Beermageddon! Oh yes, I'm sure Donohue's War on Miller will be the mother of all wars... as effective and devastating as Bill O'Reilly's Boycott of France.

UPDATE: In case you don't visit the combox, Pretty Shaved Ape's take is too good to miss.
