Turkey break

I spotted them in the back yard last night at dusk. Two adults, a female and a young male (gray), with one baby turkey:

Picture time's over. They head back to the bushes:

About half an hour later, the two adults were up in the usual tree, settling in for the night. I guess they hide the baby in their nest in the bushes, where hopefully he stays safer than his 3 missing siblings did.

Baby turkeys

I saw one of the turkeys out in the back this morning. I haven't seen any of them all summer, so I was overjoyed and went out to see her. I noticed she was sitting on the ground, which is kind of weird, since I'd never seen them do that. I was worried that she was hurt. But as I approached, I noticed some little tiny turkey legs underneath... no way!!! By the time I got back out with my camera, they were wandering off...

The little white one is trying his wings out here:

And off they go. After this picture, Mama chased them and got them all back under her.

Looks like 2 boys and 2 girls (the dark ones). I'm a grandma again!

Happy Thanksgiving

"And then there were two." This is a video of my wild turkey Gertrude, taken about a month ago. I've noticed she hasn't been around for the last couple of weeks, only her buddies Charlie and Hortense have been coming home at night. Then I was informed by a kid down the street that Gertrude met up with his pit bull and... it didn't end well for Gertie. She's gone, expired, no more, passed on ... an ex-turkey.

Vaya con el turqueo dios, Gert.
