Will Rumsfeld get the axe?

People have been calling for defense secretary Donald Rumsfeld's head since the Abu Ghraib scandal broke. But Bush and Cheney have always defended him, maintaining that he's doing a heck of a job in spite of the out of control situation in Iraq. Lately though, it's become so totally FUBAR'd that even military personnel are demanding Rumsfeld be fired. On Monday, the eve of the election, some leading military publications will run editorials calling for Rumsfeld to resign or be fired.

Iraq is the Numero Uno election issue; try as they might, the Republicans can't escape that fact. It's the big ugly elephant in the living room that they can't get the electorate to stop thinking about, and it's hurting them badly. The one thing they could do to turn the election more in their favour is to show demonstrable evidence that they really do intend to change course in Iraq -- it's not just a matter of bullshit semantics. Dumping Rumsfeld might make all the difference on Tuesday. Will Rummy take one for the team?
