Sunday, Sunday

Work today and then 3 days off... YAHOO!!! No management in today, and I shouldn't have to deal with any of them til Thursday. Unless Winger decides to make a surprise appearance, which has been happening a lot lately. Winger's been watching the security videos and he's seen us occasionally doing something other than work -- egads! Never mind that we're entitled to 2 - 15-minute breaks during out shifts, neither of which any of us ever take. And he thinks we're slacking off?? This is what unions were made for.

It's ironic that the less money you make, the more bullshit you're expected to take. When I was in advertising and making upwards of $20/hour, nobody would have dared to treat me the way we get treated at that store, by both the management and the customers. People seem to think that if you're desperate enough to work for minimum wage, you're some kind of second-class citizen who needs to hang onto the job so badly that you'd be willing to put up with any kind of abuse.

A pet peeve of mine is that we routinely work for 10 minutes off the clock after closing. Because the store is open til 10:30, so if a customer walks in at 10:29, we should be able to offer all the usual goods and services. But there are a lot of things that have to be done when closing; locking up, signing off the tills and bank machines, locking the gas pumps, etc etc all takes at least 10 minutes, and we're not supposed to do any of it until the store is actually closed. But we're only paid til closing time, 10:30. This doesn't seem like a big deal until you start doing the math: 10 minutes a day on a minimal schedule of 3 days a week adds up to 26 hours a year. In other words, we work a whole week for free. This is why Winger gets to take a 6-week vacation and I couldn't afford to take a vacation last year (which probably explains why I have such a negative attitude about my job).

On that happy note, I'll get ready for work.
