She gasps, she swoons, she clutches her pearls...

REALwingnuts are having an attack of the vapours over the discovery that the government subsidized a "Queer Film Festival" in Vancouver in August. "Why is the conservative government wasting taxpayer dollars on 'Queer' film festival?" huffs Dianne Wood on her "Family Matters" blog ("a discussion page on current issues affecting the traditional family in our society" - I hate to link to it, but it really has to be seen to be believed).

Well, Dianne. Could it be because about 2% of those taxpayers are GLBT, and they're as deserving of government support for their projects as any other minority? That's almost a million people, and all things being equal, I'm pretty sure they pay a lot more in taxes than the $23,000 subsidy the festival received. Of course, it could also be that the government is making an effort to reach out to a marginalized community, as they're doing with many other minorities, but I don't expect you to understand that. Suffice to say, a Queer Film Festival may not appeal to you, but there are lots of people (taxpayers, your favourite) that would appreciate it. I have no desire to go to the Kamloops Cowboy Festival, but I'm glad it's there for those who are interested.

Speaking of cowboys, this is teh funny in the context of the above. As I was perusing Dianne's site (and trying not to vomit), I noticed in her sidebar she had a Google ad with links to various festivals (coincidentally enough), one of which is the Toronto Film Festival. The same Toronto Film Festival that premiered "Brokeback Mountain"... a fact they proudly point out on the site Dianne's linking to. Ohmyfuckingod. Should we tell her?

Edit: Google ad now changed to something more wholesome. Bahahaaahaha...
