Lock and load, Michaelle!

Predictably, anti-choice zealots are planning to protest Dr. Henry Morgentaler's induction to the Order of Canada by converging on the residence of Her Excellency Governor-General Michaelle Jean on Wednesday July 9th:

"Campaign Life Coalition is organizing a demonstration for concerned Canadian citizens to protest the awarding of the Order of Canada to abortionist Henry Morgentaler and to seek its revocation.

WHERE: Rideau Hall – official residence of the Governor General of Canada

WHEN: Wednesday July 9, 2008 from 11:00am to 2:00pm.

CONTACT: Paul Lauzon clcottawa@rogers.com 613-729-0379"

They can protest all they want, and it is certainly their right to do so. But like their Marching For Life, cruising around in fetusmobiles© and shoving fetusporn posters into the faces of unwitting citizens on the street, it will be a largely symbolic action with little or no real world effect. They might score a little attention, but in the end, revocation of Dr. Morgentaler's O of C is a fetus fetishist's pipe dream that ain't gonna happen.

The Order of Canada for Dr. Morgentaler has been in the works for years. Do the anti-choicers seriously think that the O of C committee hasn't already considered all the possible repercussions, the shrieking, peaking and freaking that would almost certainly ensue from the No Choice peanut gallery? They're not going to finally bestow the honour upon the 85-year-old Dr. M, only to take it back at the behest of a small group of anti-abortion fanatics.

Like abortion rights, Dr. Morgentaler's Order of Canada wasn't given on a whim but only after years of agitation and deliberation. Like abortion rights, the decision won't be changing anytime soon.

But Michaelle, I have a paintball gun you can borrow if you need it. I trust you have a dog to supply the ammo.
