Maher under seige!

After Bill Maher's extremely un-PC but also extremely funny (and extremely true) remarks about the Pope's visit last week, Wingnuttia resounded with the sound of exploding heads. The Catholic League's perpetually-outraged Bill Donohue, who's always up for demanding an apology from someone or other for some slight or other, real or imagined, angrily put Maher back on his shit-list for the umpteenth time. Maher capitulated in his own little way and apologized for calling the Pope a Nazi (hahahahaha!), but went on to point out the cold hard truth that any CEO heading an institution of child molesters would probably be fired.

"Fired!?" thundered the "American Life League", grabbing its collective crotch, "We got yer 'fired' right here, Maher!":

The campaign to silence Bill Maher has begun with a website set up for the express purpose of getting everyone on board with the Fire Bill Maher! Project. Talk about offensive! Why don't these people know how to design a website? But entertainingly, there's a petition with comments:

Aside from punctuation, conspicuously absent amid the outrage and piousness is any comment on the harsh ugly truth of Maher's remarks -- that the Catholic church knowingly enabled vicious pedophile priests to continue abusing children through a systemic cover-up operation. Any institution that engages in something so heinous has permanently lost its right to be outraged about any volley of criticism fired its way.

But never mind that -- helmet on and head down, Bill -- you've got INcoming! And the Coalition of the Swilling is at your service if you need us!

Pope Benedict XVI is in Washington DC right this very minute, meeting with Georgie. The Pedophile Priest Damage Control Road Show is on a roll:

"POPE Benedict XVI has begun a visit to the US, hoping to heal wounds left in the local church by a decades-long sex scandal he said made him feel deep shame.

The 80-year-old pontiff was given an unprecedented welcome by US President George W. Bush, who was with his wife, Laura, and daughter, Jenna, at Andrews Air Force base near Washington to greet him.

No president has ever welcomed a visiting head of state at the airport."

That's not too surprising -- these days Georgie must have all kinds of spare time for hangin' with Benny. But anyway...

"Benedict will address the sex scandal that has left the US church financially strapped and morally battered at a meeting with Catholic clergy."

Yay! Finally.

"But he is not expected to see victims of priests."

Maybe I'm missing something, but how does he address the sex scandal and "heal the wounds" without seeing any victims? I know he's got that infallibility thing going on, but wow. That's impressive. But never mind that...

The Pope is motoring around DC in the Popemobile, a vehicle that's always fascinated and thrilled me. No doubt its driver will be adhering to the Vatican's Ten Commandments for Driving:

Now I know where I've been going wrong -- I usually don't pray until the brakes fail.

"Take Climate Change seriously"...

... said the Pope!?:

"VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope Benedict on Wednesday made another strong appeal for the protection of the environment, saying issues such as climate change had become gravely important for the entire human race.

The Pope made his appeal, his second on environmental issues in four days, at the end of his general audience before some 16,000 people in St Peter's Square.

Care of water resources and attention to climate change are matters of grave importance for the entire human family," he said."

Okay, I can dig that. Benedict XVI, though chock full o'willnuts on some other issues (womens' rights and AIDS prevention in particular), obviously has some scientific smarts, at least when it comes to the environment. Credit where credit is due: the Pope is massively influential among the world's 1billion+ Catholics, and his definition of climate change as a "matter of grave importance" will no doubt lead many to face reality on the issue. "Hats off" to him for that.

But I wonder how conservative Catholics will square this with their Protestant so-con compatriots, who stubbornly resist the notion that climate change is anything but a liberal scam. Conservatives in general are already split on the issue, but the Pope's declaration might split the so-con element as well. Ha, pretty soon the only people screaming about the "global warming hoax" will be the rattlebrained rapturists.
